Most "AI app builders" are frontend toys. You describe an app, you get a beautiful landing page, and the moment you need user accounts or a database, you're back in Cursor with a half-finished mockup and a familiar headache. Emergent.sh is the first one we've tested that breaks that pattern.

I gave it the same prompt I give every builder I evaluate: "Build me a SaaS where freelance writers can submit articles, paying clients can review and comment, and Stripe handles the per-article payment." Emergent shipped a working version in roughly four hours of back-and-forth. Not a clickable mockup — a functioning web app with user accounts, a Postgres database I could query, payment flow, and an admin dashboard.

What it actually does well

The killer feature is full-stack reasoning. When you ask for "user accounts," it doesn't just stub out a login page — it provisions auth, sets up the user table, wires sessions, and gives you a real account creation flow. Stripe integration is genuinely one-click on the Pro plan. The hosting is included, which sounds minor until you've spent three hours trying to deploy a Lovable export.

Where it falls short

It's not perfect. The generated code is opinionated — fine if you never plan to read it, frustrating if you want to extend it manually. Iteration speed slows once your app gets complex (think: 30+ database tables). And the free tier hits limits fast; you'll be on the $20/month plan within a week if you're serious.

Who should buy it

Buy it if: you're a non-technical founder who needs to validate an idea this month, not next quarter. You'd otherwise be paying a $5K agency or burning weeks of your co-founder's time. Skip it if: you ship production code daily — Cursor or Claude Code will give you more control with a smaller learning tax.
